Wind Turbines

A wind turbine creates mechancial energy from the winds kinetic energy. It's much like a windmill, but instead of the energy being sent directly to a piece of machinery it's converted to electricity for energy distribution. You'll find wind turbines also being referred to as a wind generator or wind energy converter.

Wind turbines are optimized using aerodynamic modelling. By determining the optimum tower height, number of blades, shape of blades and control sytems a wind turbine can exploit the wind energy for a particular location.

Each wind turbine includes three integral components:

• Rotor component (blades)
• Generator component (gearbox, electrical generator, control electronics)
• Structural Support component (tower)
